Resistance fighters

Amal looked downward, ashamed, feeling a misery she was forced to live. Sometimes she gave an expansive, but silent, sigh that seemed lift her up from the floor. These sighs were her attempt to chase away an abstract weight inside her. It came from a difficult life, it started badly... and it seemed to become worse and worse.
She was sitting near her two sons on a mattress. They were lying on the floor in front of a frugally bought dinner, it was served on a large, round tray and in the middle of a empty room.
The dinner consisted of some rice with vegetables, if they were especially lucky, they could find a tiny piece of chicken.
Every time Amal looked up from the plate her gaze fell upon the solitary picture that decorates the room. It displayed all the members of her family who became martyrs during the first intifada. This was so because an Israeli air strike completely destroyed their house.
At that moment Amal was just four years old, the same age her youngest son Islam is, who is now disputing over the best bite of the dinner with his sister, and his elder by three years, named Karama.
Amal remembers being a toddler well. At that time her family lived together as a large and generally speaking, they were a typical Palestinian family. The bomb fell in the middle of the room, immediately the house collapsed.
The Israelis declared that it was a mistake, and the army gave a typical collateral damage explanation. They knew that they destroyed an innocent family, I wonder if they care at all about such injustice, an act of murder that they undeniably committed. Afterward they conducted an absurd military investigation to "hopefully" discover the perpetrators of the massacre.
Amal still does not know how she survived.
She was pulled from the rubble after three days of living in it. Every night before sleeping she curses that day. She would rather die like the rest of her family. Today the rest of her family seems to observe her daily misery, they do so from the picture hanging on the wall. Her father was did survive the bombing, he had gone out to buy something to eat, but before discovering that she was still alive he blew himself up near a checkpoint in Ramallah.
Only now, after almost thirty years, Amal stops hating her father and realizes that desperation originating from his situation forced him to commit suicide. Yet she has never really been able to forgive her father for abandoning her.
From that point onward Amal's life was no less of a disaster.
One of Amal's Aunts, who lived in Gaza, welcomed her to the extended family. Then as soon as Amal was in her twenties she was forced to marry her cousin, Mohammad. Amal loved her cousin, but she considered him like her older brother with whom she had practically grown up with, and of course that's why she didn't want to marry him. Unfortunately Amal's wishes were not important and so when she was only twenty years old she married her cousin. He was a hero of the resistance. During the second intifada he fought with the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade and lost his leg, which was hit by an Israeli sniper.
As soon as Karama was born they saw immediately that something was wrong. The girl had a rare genetic disease. Amal had always thought that it was not a good idea to marry her cousin, as if she had a premonition that something would go wrong. It seemed that Karama might die at any moment due to such extreme circumstances, instead she had an incredible strength. She wanted to live, no matter the costs. She wanted to have a full life, even though the doctors said it was a miracle that she was still alive.
As if it was not enough, after two years a civil war broke out in Gaza and her husband was killed in a firefight by the militias of Hamas which was at that time against Fatah. Incredibly, brothers who just six years earlier fought side by side against the common Israeli enemy, then killed each other.
When she received the news that Mohammad was dead, Amal implored Allah to carry away Karama with the other child she was carrying in her body. But Allah was unresponsive, in any case there was a different plan for her. Amal's son Islam came into the world after less than one month.
Without any help Amal raised Islam, who fortunately was healthy, unlike Karama. The poor girl started to breathe badly and she had a lot of pains every time she ate: the disease was consuming her from the inside and her mother's health declined with her daughter. The doctors in Gaza did not understand what the disease was. Amal tried several times to take her daughter abroad to get proper treatment, but the Israelis denied permission to for this because of her father.
So her nerves and patience were put to the test in innumerable ways.
Very often, like now in front of that solitary plate of rice, Amal discovered herself thinking why she had to continue a life so unfair. She then decided to put an end to it all, then Allah would have no choice but to act.
Yet deeply in her heart she abhorred the idea of behaving like her father and leaving her children alone. In addition, when she had these thoughts of death she always met the gaze of her daughter Karama, who despite being aware of the disease that was leading her to a premature death she still found the strength to smile. Karama wanted to go to school and to play, as if there were a hundred years to live. Amal believed that Karama could read her thoughts, because every time that Amal felt defeated by such a hard life her little daughter stared at her, thus barring her to go any further with the self pity.
Therefore every night, she patiently waits for the children to finish their food. Then she washes the dishes, puts them to sleep, and then she goes to bed with them, without asking herself more unanswerable questions. The only real feeling of relief for her is from those two tiny, warm and fragile bodies next to her when dreaming. There is no doubt her happiness resides in her children to whom she is just trying to give a better future to.

Amal todavía no sabe cómo sobrevivió.

Happening in Gaza

“Hai sentito?” mi chiede I.

«Today is Sunday, tomorrow we’ll die, today I dress up with silk and love.»
Pier Paolo Pasolini

Today is Sunday and I have been invited to the birthday of I. who is a five year old smiling child with two big black and bright eyes. I. also has a round face with two plump cheeks that are soft and very elastic. Perhaps this is from the many pinches that his mother and his sisters give him so as to teach him how to behave in the presence of a guest, especially a foreign guest.
I begin to tell I. my tales trying to keep him quiet, but maybe because of my bad Arabic I. immediately begins to laugh out loud... and then, slapping the palms of his hands on his head, he explains to me that the talking stars don't exist.
It's very sad that children in Gaza do not believe in fairy tales anymore, perhaps because Santa Claus has never existed here... or perhaps because in Gaza the eyes of the children have seen bombs falling from the sky instead of stars.
I. climbs my shoulders, pulls my hair, bites me and tries to find who knows what inside my ears, regardless of the reproaches of his mother... a silly sleight of hand could entertain I. and kept him quiet for a few minutes. Then something crosses my mind, I say:
"Come on! Look! Sit down and shut up!" Generally I'm not so rude in addressing the children but so far with my Arabic knowledge I can't produce more articulate sentences.
So by taking a coin, while with my right hand I simulate putting it into an imaginary slot on the back of my neck, I settle the coin between the forearm and the biceps of my right arm, with my left hand. Then I call I.
I tell him to look in my hair for the coin. I open my hands showing the palms and the back for two or three times. Then I open my mouth, I move my tongue up and down and there is no trace of the coin, it seems to have simply vanished.
Just for show I put my index finger and my thumb in my mouth pretending to have to take something stuck to my palate, with a little cough the coin falls to the ground as if it came from my mouth.
I see the eyes of I. light up, he starts running around the house calling everyone, he wants me to repeat the magic trick.
He forces me to take off my sweater and stay in just a T-shirt to prove everyone that I do not hide the dime in the sleeve of the sweater. He also forces me to repeat the magic trick several times with different objects, fortunately all of them small enough to be hidden in my arm "The hole in my neck is not very big!" I state.
In this way time passes quickly and the party ends, now it's time to go to sleep... but I. wants to sleep with me, perhaps he's convinced that during the night, while I'm sleeping, he will be able to find the hole that connects the back of my neck with my mouth. Despite his intentions he instantly falls asleep, exhausted by many emotions of the day.
Even I fall asleep happily seeing that at the end wars and armies have not completely killed the naive and magic nature of children in Gaza, and that maybe the kids do not believe in talking stars but they still believe in magic.
The house is plunged into darkness and silence. The meow of some alley cat and a rooster with a bad sense of the time are the only noises of the night.
Suddenly a loud explosion wakes me up. The house is shaking and I find myself sitting on the bed with my eyes wide open and thinking "What was that?" "A bomb or a rocket or maybe an explosion of some gas cylinder in a near house." "Oh no, the house has trembled, I guess it was a bomb!" and while I'm still thinking I hear the sound of another explosion, fortunately far away but not as far as to not wake I. up.
"And if a bomb falls on our heads?" I think surely that is a bombing.
"Did you hear it?" I. asks me.
"No, what?" I reply to him, trying somehow to protect him with my answer, but then a third explosion immediately brings us back to reality. The house shakes again and I. runs into the mother's bed.
His mother embraces him, she passes her arm around his neck and with her hand on his head she presses him closely to her continuing to sleep. She has not even woken up, for her, nothing is happening. For her everything is normal because many nights I. goes to sleep in her bed. Sometimes just a bad dream convinces I. that it is better to sleep with his mother rather than alone. These explosions are far and she is now used to distinguish, even while she is sleeping, the bombs that are really close. That's when she is the first to wake up, that's when she takes her children a semblance of perceived safety, but that's not going to happen tonight. Tonight there is nothing to worry about. She can continue to sleep, tired from taking care of so many children and also because this week the children of her husband's sister came to live in her house, they are homeless due to the bad weather of the last weeks that left whole neighborhoods destroyed.
I remain awake and I start to think that if a bombing killed me it would be a shame, not a shame for me because I would feel nothing. It would instead be a sorry event for the people who love me "how would they do?" I think "hahaha... don't worry, the world will continue to spin without you... and after a while people resume their normal lives, like it has always been and always will be." "Of course I still want to do so many things, to visit so many countries. I feel as if have yet many places to discover and a lot of experiences to have."
"Maybe you would rather me be in a place where you can take refuge; a big space for a big head? Yet there is no safe hiding place big enough for your head! Haha!"
This rant seems to emerge from what I call my Little Star... And now I can hear someone say "Here we go again! He has started again with his Little Star! Even a five years old child explained to you that your Little Stars does not exist" "But I don't mind to believe she exists, I like this whimsicalness alive inside me! Maybe I should get a proper job instead of loitering around the world. After all I'm almost forty!" So half-asleep, with all these confused thoughts inside my head, I see a first ray of light coming through the curtains of the house. Dawn comes and the house wakes up.
During breakfast none of the family mentions the bombing of the night, including I.
He seems to have forgotten everything, even that I slept in his house because as soon as he notices me he gets excited to see me at the table for breakfast. He runs up to me and makes a long speech, unintelligible for me, then he starts to look for the hole in my neck.
I laugh loud glad that he has not forgotten the magic trick.
I thank them after the meal and go back to my house with a strange feeling; maybe I dreamed the whole thing? Maybe there was no bombing tonight.
While home I turn on internet and watch the news. I find out that during the night the Israeli army actually bombed a portion of Gaza City, while claiming to have struck military training areas. The result of the bombing: one little girl only four years old, deceased, and 4 others children and their mother seriously injured.
I wonder if today is the birthday of the little girl killed.
I wonder if she planned to celebrate her birthday with a special guest, a foreign magician with a hole in the head.

"¿Has oído?" Me pregunta I.
"No ¿qué?"

Once upon a time in Gaza

While sitting on the beach I nourished my soul and let my mind savor the years of my past that I have spent traveling around the world. Suddenly I felt a pain in my chest and a lump in my throat. I'm still too young to have worry about a heart attack so I tried to understand what caused this strange feeling. So I started to mumble improbable apologies so that the Sea forgives me for having lived too long away from him.
"The fact is" I explained to the Sea "that I really believe I can live alone very well." Luckily the Sea is very kind and rarely gets angry. So while waves pacified my heart, suddenly my Little Star sends me a message. For a moment I was surprised at her sense of timing and I wondered how it's possible that she talks to me every time that I start...
"Drop it, chump! How can you live alone if you're not able to prepare even spaghetti with clams!"
As usual my Little Star teased me so I resentfully replied to her that I am able to cook the best spaghetti with clams of all the Mediterranean Sea. Then she started to tell me what her wonderful eyes saw millions of years ago on the earth.
«Papparapà, parapararappaparapà...Once upon a time there was a kingdom of humans, and a kingdom of chimpanzees. The chimpanzees imprisoned humans, these poor beings were tortured and killed. The sadistic and evil chimpanzees made experimentations on humans: rationed their food, poisoned the air of the cage, stole their water, prevented the men to move freely even within the cage and occasionally they killed them. All of this was said to be for the kingdom of chimpanzees' security.
So the wisest of the sages, who ruled the kingdom of humans, decided it was time to react and therefore began to beat the heads of their fellows adding pain and suffering to those that already had been more than imposed upon by the chimpanzees.
Zenzen...End of story»
"But... but..." I protest a little baffled by the story "Is that the end of the story?"
"My dear chump, your biggest fortune consists in having a big heart," my Little Star says.
One part of me wanted to hug my Little Star because of her return, another part wanted to tell her to go to hell for the usual insult. However I ignore the offense end begin to understand her explanation.
"Too many times ‘the question of Palestine’ has been relegated within the borders of the Middle East and reduced to a local conflict whose solution should be found on improbable agreements or dichotomous choices (one state or two states solution). But the Palestinian struggle against the Israeli government's racist oppression goes far beyond the borders of this land and reaches the heart of humanity that has not yet stopped dreaming and hoping for a world where all people have equal rights. A world” my Little Star continues “that allows everyone to be free without obeying anything but their own heart and their own way.”
"But actually in Palestine millions of human beings are forced to live in hardship, are humiliated and are living under constant terror of being arrested or killed for the only ‘unpardonable crime’ to be born on this land." I interrupt her "Furthermore the worst thing is that the ordinary people and the simple workers are always those who suffer this situation. Here in Gaza for instance farmers and fishermen are attacked almost daily by the Israeli army, the ridiculous excuse they make is so that their government can guarantee and ensure peace for the Western world."
"Exactly!" my Little Star steps in "It is precisely in this way that the Zionist racist propaganda shows its hypocrisy. Suddenly ‘the question of Palestine’ changes from a local problem concerning the 'national security' to a global and collective problem about international terrorism."
"In reality" I continue "the Israeli army is simply killing innocent civilians and the Israeli government is terrorizing the whole world, including the Israelis themselves due to pathetic propaganda that describes 'Israelis that are threatened by international terrorism'. It's a terrorism they have created and from their excuse the racist right party can keep firmly in power. They are disgusting beings that have carried on for years a horrendous project of ethnic cleansing."
"This situation will change, my dear chump. You know that I live light years far away and that's why I tell you about things that happened on the earth millions of years ago. At the same time, believe it or not, I live in the future, and today I know things that I can only tell you in millions of years. But now I want to make an exception and I tell you that falsifications, deceptions and the psychology of terror has a short life."
"The day will come" I start to dream "in which all the dreamers of any latitude, of any faith, of any flag, all free men will cry 'Enough!'. All winners will begin to walk together in order to reclaim peace, and with a strong and determined voice they will say 'here we are!', 'We won't give up!', 'We shall overcome!'... The day will come..."
Then I woke up in the middle of the night in the usual Gaza, in the usual Palestine, in the same old world where personal social climbing, the old-style backroom politics, control of the masses and the struggle for power are the only important things.
Then when standing up and going towards the window I hear my Little Star whispering to me "I think you should not talk in this way because government leaders are so sensitive, they might get mad." But I ask to her: "How many of them are thrashing in our head this way and how many are to impose upon us further? "
No answer, in the meanwhile there is still the usual Gaza, the usual Palestine, the same old world where men have forgotten the meaning of the word ‘freedom’.

"I have not received many answers to my referendum, my Little Star and the few ones were exactly divided in half between those who wanted me to continue to talk to you and those tired and bored with my conversations with you."
Then, not knowing if I have anymore a little star protecting and listening to me I say: "But I received an avalanche of kisses that almost choked me, and so many sighs that the most powerful hurricane seems like a breeze by comparison."
"So why don’t you build a wind power plant? You could solve the problem of electricity in Gaza!" My Little Star sarcastically asks me... or at least I guess she said it and in the same moment I think: what a coincidence, sometimes she answers me... when she wants she can hear me and talk to me. But I don’t dwell too much on these thoughts and I reply: "Maybe from above humans look alike to you, but you should know that here there are some men forcing other men to live a very hard life. That’s why for example in Gaza building materials can not enter. Under these conditions it is impossible to build something as big as a wind power plant. To tell the truth, a solution could be little wind turbines built with recycled materials that are sufficient to produce electricity for small families... after reading this letter maybe someone will realize the idea!
Then I continue: "But this is not what I want to tell you now. After all we've always been only good at telling stories each others, so now I want to tell you The History of  the Little Mouse."
So very sadly, like long time ago a young woman sent letters to her beloved in battle or today many Palestinians send letters to their relatives unjustly held prisoners in Israeli jails indefinitely, without knowing if this letter will ever reach its recipient, I begin to tell:
«Once upon a time a Little Mouse lived in a small hole, in the wall of a small kitchen, in a tiny little house. The small kitchen was lighted by a small light placed right next to the little hole where the Little Mouse lived. Whenever the Little Mouse put his little nose out of the little hole to look for a small cheese to eat, a very big shadow scared him. So the Little Mouse immediately came back in his little hole, terrified by the very big shadow created by the small light.
There must be a very big cat out there, the Little Mouse thought trembling. He was very scared by the big black shadow of his little nose that the small light drew on the wall of the small kitchen.
One fine day, the small light switched off and the trick of the big shadow ended. So the Little Mouse was finally able to get out of the little hole and go around the small kitchen to look for the little cheese to eat. But he found only a few crumbs and no cheese because someone ate it long time before.»
Used to talking to myself, sure, however, that at least the sea listens to me, I ask to my Little Star:
"I don’t have to explain to you that in the story all things were very little because we're just a tiny dot in the universe. You are a little star and you know that, don’t you?"
Like usual I received a depressing silent response, so I walked home thinking that one day I will receive all the answers I’m looking for and that I have never got so far. But, ironically, I am also convinced that at that point I will have lost all interest in any kind of response. We'll see.
Given that I never like morals of the stories because all final options are just a trap...
Moral 1: Do not be afraid of your own shadow.
Moral 2: Be brave and make the first step before it is too late.
Moral 3: You will have light at your home only if you pay your bill (except if you are living in Gaza*).
The " Moral 3" seems stupid? Replace the small light with the Zionist project. Just turn off the switch (money) and there will be no light.
Now you can also replace the small light with capitalism, or with the exploitation of the planet's resources or with the abuses of the powerful people over the poor people. Instead of the Little Mouse you can put exploited people, and you can replace cheese with justice, dreams or utopia.

* The lack of fuel for the Gaza power plant, due to the Israeli blockade and the destruction of tunnels in Rafah along the Egyptian border, is causing a very big increase in daily blackouts which causes enormous damage especially in the hospitals.

"¿Sabes Estrellita que no he recibido muchas respuestas a mi consulta?

Perché mi continui a mandare messaggi?”

A strong breeze blows from the sea everyday in Gaza. It brings a bitter taste of freedom and strange messages that seem to come from places lost in time and space. Messages arriving from the stars, I thought. But in reality, I now believe that these messages are nothing more than noise from the soul and heart because the stars do not exist.
"What do you mean, chump?" Exclaimed my Little Star with surprise.
"Uh?! Who said that?" I ask myself looking around.
"Don’t be stupid, chump, you make me cry!"
"Oh, no no. I certainly don’t want make you cry!" I answer very surprised that a product of my imagination can really cause sadness.
"Be careful that I can read in your mind! I am not a product of your imagination. I am real and you are very naughty!"
"Ok!" I say impatiently "But how can I believe that you really exist if I can not see and hear you from so long that now I doubt it's really been a time when I saw you and I talked to you..."
"What?! Don’t you get my messages?" she asks me "And if you want to see me you can just raise your eyes to the sky" she adds.
"Oh, yes!" I reply "But your messages could come just from my imagination and I've already explained to you that the sky I see today is only a picture of millions of years ago. So maybe I am right to say that the stars do not exist and that I’ll find out the real truth only among millions of years, by which time I'll be gone!" Then thinking aloud I mumble "What's the point talking about truth... What is it; where is it hidden and why I have to discover it?".
"The reality is what you see and what you hear" insists my Little Star "raise your eyes to the sky and listen to me again, as you always have done".
"Maybe from your point of view and from your perspective you're absolutely right" I say to her "but I want to give you an example: Imagine being locked in a box and someone shows you pictures and tells you some stories. If you believe in what you see and what you hear you're tricking yourself because the reality is different out of the box!"
"It’s what you humans do every day! Stay inside your homes believing in what others people tell you by television or internet." and my Little Star continues "Humans should return to being poets and dreamers and they should recover that romanticism which is now buried under layers of telematic junk."
"But it is precisely for this reason that I do not believe in what I see and feel." I protest, confused by the words of my Little Star that seem to confirm what I'm trying to say, "and I will not believe in your messages if I can't have you next to me during the day and night! Why are you sending me messages?"
"Because I want to keep alive your heart that you thought died when I met you. Now you believe your heart is alive, but there is no worse deceit than to believe yourself alive when you are dead beforehand." my Little Star answers me.
"Oh, I do not understand anymore... I believe people are dead if they do not seek the truth, if they do not try to understand what is happening around and inside themselves. For this reason I feel alive. But at the same time it seems to me that the truth is like an onion: you remove a layer after another to try to get to the heart, and at the end you have nothing in your hand and the only real things were the layers that have passed under your eyes. After all you have put aside believing in those layers, it's like an obstacle that covers the truth." I say this sadly and then add "So I start to believe that you are like the heart of an onion, like the real truth, like the pure and simple love, or like God, or you can call it how you want, something that I have always been looking for, something that is needed to live while in the layers...but something that does not really exist."
"What kind of chump are you! I am not any of what you described...and you are an onion, not me! I'm just a Little Star that I don’t know what I did wrong in my life to deserve a chump man just like you!" My Little Star gets upset "And what should I do? Should I stop to send you messages? Should I stop to believe in you? Do you want that we do not talk anymore? Do you think in this way you will feel better and you will stop thinking about your stupid onions?"
"I do not know" I say with a shrug "I could propose a referendum and ask my readers if you really exist and if I have to continue to talk to you".
"Oh yes! What a great idea!" She jokes "After all that's how you humans are organized. Everyone as an individual means nothing and there is a mass of ignorant slobs that decide for everyone..."
"That is not so! Such a system would work if the masses were well educated... hence, aware" I reply. “But today things are different here on Earth... everything is more complicated with a voting systems, politicians, political parties, laws..."
"So, how does the system work? Can you explain it to me please?" My Little Star asks skeptically.
"Just like my blog now" I explain "I ask my readers to respond if I have to continue to talk to you or not. Yet since the blog is mine, I'll do whatever I want!"
It is exactly how democracy works today! Politics has become 'their own' and they decide independently of the will of the people drugged by false information.
"Phew! Whoever understands you is clever!" my Little Star snorts "You had the only virtue of being a good person with a big heart and now instead you are behaving badly with me...and you're making me suffer with your onions, your real truth, and all your bizarre reasoning."
"Well, yeah, maybe you're right. Maybe I just..." and suddenly I wake up alone in the bed once again talking to myself.
P.S. You can send me your feedback after sunset at Pito, Jarabibtina, 3. Promenade of Gaza, Palestine. Young women up to 200 years of age can also attach a kiss and a whisper that so as to help me dream again.

"¡Uh! ¿Quién ha hablado?" Me pregunto mirando a mi alrededor.
No recibes mis mensajes?"
Me pregunta mi Estrellita escéptica.
